Tony Award winner Sutton Foster and Georgia Engel will star in the pre-Broadway tryout of The Drowsy Chaperone. The tuner is set to run at Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theatre from November 10 through December 24.
Directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw Tony-nominated for his choreography of Spamalot, The Drowsy Chaperone is a love letter to the extravagant musicals of the 1920s. It offers the audience the chance to see one of those "lost" musicals through the eyes of one fan with an almost omniscient knowledge of the play and players. The show features a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, music by Greg Morrison and lyrics by Lisa Lambert.
Foster starred as the title character in Thoroughly Modern Millie, a role she originated in the 2000 La Jolla Playhouse premiere of the musical after originally being hired as an understudy. For her performance in the tuner, she was the recipient of the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Astaire Awards. Earlier this year, Foster headlined the Broadway musical Little Women, receiving a Tony nomination for her work as the headstrong Jo. She has also appeared on Broadway in Les Misérables, Annie, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Grease!. Her notable regional credits include Dorian at Goodspeed Musicals and the world premiere of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David revue What the World Needs Now at the Old Globe.
Engel was nominated twice for Emmy Awards in the role of Georgette the wife of Ted Baxter on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Other notable television credits include Coach on which she appeared for six years and Everybody Loves Raymond. She has appeared on Broadway in the musicals Hello, Dolly!, My One and Only and The Boys from Syracuse. Her off-Broadway credits include The House of Blue Leaves and Cut the Ribbons.
